The GSENM is a 1.9 million acre tract with no paved roads, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Distinction is important as other BLM lands allow rockhounding. NOT so of the Staircase because it is a National Monument. The landscape is impressive but the dirt roads dampen the enthusiasm to explore when collecting is forbidden.
